mammoth networks marries carriers at fiber hotels

National telecom carriers have a resource with the arrival of Mammoth Networks, a company that is joining disparate network at common facilities. As a facilities-based reseller, Mammoth is combining multiple carriers to enhance private-line connectivity in the lower 48 states.

Mammoth's physical presence in fiber hotels is allowing the company to combine TDM and IP solutions, creating private circuits where they wouldn't be possible before. Mammoth customers (known as Partners within the company) have additional reach into markets where an end-to-end solution does not currently exist. The example Mammoth uses is a Partner who desires a 100Mbps connection between rural Montana and a location in Seattle - the company provisions an OC3 in Montana, pointed to a GigE connection on the Seattle end, seamlessly transitioning the circuit between the two locations.

The demand for such a solution is high. Although a carrier with a presence in Montana may have a large network infrastructure, that same carrier may have trouble quoting the other end of the circuit in Seattle. This often pushes the customer to a higher-cost solution, without the ability to choose the vendor that best suits their needs.

Mammoth has developed the infrastructure to support backbone connections in multiple fiber hotels. This includes arranging and installing muxing and MPLS equipment from Seattle to Atlanta and Chicago to San Jose. With equipment in the nation's largest carrier facilities, Mammoth is poised to combine services that benefit their Partners.

"As our network has grown, we realized its success relied on choosing the most appropriate carrier." states Brian Worthen, head of business development at Mammoth Networks. "We found that by working with choice carriers, we are able to improve reliability across our network. It just so happens that the carriers we work with want the business enough to stay price-competitive as well."

Mammoth's private DSL solution has spring-boarded the company into private-line circuits, where they bring their experience to their Partners. While most of the industry is focused on price, Mammoth has worked to develop carrier relationships that add depth through reliability and redundancy.

Worthen explains that large carriers often secure the services of multiple other carriers to package a solution, disregarding quality of the circuit and the support issues inherent with a circuit that might combine three or four different carriers. This is the driving force behind Mammoth's approach to using choice vendors - carriers they have selected based on quality and support.

Mammoth Networks is an aggregator of data services, serving fourteen Western states with their layer 2 DSL network and the contiguous lower 48 states with their private-line T1s and fiber services. Mammoth enables its Partners by erasing the invisible lines of the telecommunications structure, and leveling the playing field for Internet Service Providers. The privately-held company is based in Gillette, Wyoming.
